NPTA has asked pest controllers to diligently check wasp traps for any evidence of Asian hornets – as the association needs help in tracking this invasive species that are a risk to our native honey bees and other pollinators.
First spotted in the UK in 2016, Asian hornets (Vespa velutina) are spreading across parts of Europe and could cause real damage if not controlled.
Key features to ID an Asian hornet
Size: Slightly smaller than the native European hornet
Colour: Dark brown or black body with a velvety appearance
Legs: Distinctive yellow tips, giving them the nickname “yellow-legged hornet”
Face: They have a noticeable orange face
Orange Band: Near the rear of the abdomen.
