The UK Government has announced a major youth employment initiative aimed at helping young people gain skills, training and employment while supporting employers to develop their future workforce.
The programme includes a range of incentives designed to encourage businesses to recruit young people, alongside wider reforms to apprenticeships and employment support.
At the centre of the announcement is the Youth Guarantee, a commitment to ensure that every young person aged 16-24 has access to opportunities in work, education or training. The initiative will invest £2.5 billion over the next three years, supporting almost one million young people and unlocking up to 500,000 jobs, training and learning opportunities.
Youth Jobs Grant
One of the key measures is the introduction of a Youth Jobs Grant, which will provide £3,000 to employers for every young person aged 18-24 they recruit who has been receiving Universal Credit and actively looking for work for six months.
The scheme is expected to support around 60,000 young people over the next three years, helping businesses bring new talent into the workforce while providing young people with valuable employment opportunities.
Support for apprenticeships and early careers
The announcement also includes additional support for apprenticeships, including a £2,000 incentive for SMEs recruiting apprentices aged 16-24, alongside wider reforms aimed at making apprenticeships more flexible and accessible for employers.
In addition, the Jobs Guarantee scheme will be expanded to include young people aged 18-24, providing a six-month paid job placement with employment costs covered by the Government for eligible participants.
