The National Pest Technicians Association (NPTA) said it continues to identify and fill the gaps in the training on offer for our industry.
Two one-day classroom courses currently being offered around the UK are:
- Rodent Problem Solving; and
- Risk Assessments, COSHH Assessments and Safe Systems of Work.
Rodent Problem Solving covers some technical details of how to select the best rodenticide formulation for the job, the science of resistance, relevant research findings etc., along with discussing what to do in various rodent infestation challenges. It is illustrated extensively with case studies of troublesome infestations that were successfully solved.
Grahame Turner, NPTA’s technical manager, said: “The Risk Assessments course takes you through, step by step, how to write a ‘suitable and sufficient’ risk assessment. Many pest control technicians are exposed unnecessarily, on a daily basis, to life-changing injuries; and many pest control companies could suffer existential crises of guilt and financial loss due to unforeseen safety hazards.
“Learn how to formulate your own clear and concise risk assessments, rather than relying on either luck or external consultants who are not sufficiently knowledgeable about pest control.”
The next courses will be held in Warrington, Stirling, Durham and Nottingham in late September/early October, followed by further locations throughout October and November. They are open to both NPTA members and non-members.

Mr Turner said that there are three more NPTA On The Road days this year.
NPTA will visit Cwmbran (September 4), Durham (September 11) and Reigate (October 16).
“These are full days of training and exhibits,” Mr Turner said. “A variety of experts and professional trainers present on diverse important topics; all are welcome.”
