BASIS is presenting a new series of online microlearning courses called Bees and Beyond: Exploring Beneficial Insects.

This engaging course series has been developed with entomologist, photographer, and science communicator Kirk Mason, whose work has been featured in BBC Wildlife Magazine and BBC Springwatch.

BASIS said that Mr Mason’s deep knowledge and infectious enthusiasm for the natural world make him a perfect guide for this topic. He has carefully crafted these courses to be enjoyed by everyone, whether you’re a complete beginner, a keen gardener, a farm worker, or someone working professionally in land management or conservation.

“I wanted to create something that made the world of beneficial insects approachable, even if you’ve never studied insects before,” Mr Mason explained.

“Beneficials aren’t just honeybees, they include beetles, flies, wasps, and so many more creatures that are absolutely crucial to ecosystems and food production. I wanted people to come away seeing these insects differently.”

Bees and Beyond offers four courses focused on some of the UK’s most important insect groups. Participants will learn how to recognise key species, understand their biology and lifecycles, explore where they live, and discover why they matter so much.

The course also provides practical, everyday advice on how anyone can help support insect populations, from planting the right flowers to creating better habitats.

Each course is 10 minutes long, making it ideal for busy professionals and curious learners alike.

Reflecting on the design of the course, Mr Mason said: “I wanted it to be friendly and digestible. You don’t need a biology degree or any prior experience. It’s about opening a door into a really fascinating, often overlooked part of the natural world.”

This series is open to all, with discounted rates available for BASIS members.
