A nest of Asian hornets, an invasive predator non-native to the UK, was found in Yorkshire this week

YorkshireLive reported that this week, there was a confirmed sighting of the hornet in Yarm, in Stockton-on-Tees in North Yorkshire.

Unlike their British counterparts, Asian hornets are extremely bad news as they prey on and kill bees and bumblebees, meaning they threaten to wipe out the UK’s pollinators and with it, the UK’s food supply, if left unchecked.

A nest was then found close to the River Tees and experts are rushing to have the nest destroyed and removed as soon as possible.

Dhonn Atkinson, posting on the Cleveland Beekeepers Association Facebook page, said: “My team have found the nest this morning and plans for its destruction and removal are underway. Please remain vigilant.”
