The British Pest Control Association is encouraging pest management businesses to get involved in the Government’s new Youth Guarantee scheme, describing it as a practical route to bringing fresh talent into the sector.
Working with the Department for Work and Pensions, BPCA is highlighting the opportunity the programme offers employers at a time when many firms are focused on succession planning and long-term workforce resilience.
Under the Jobs Guarantee, eligible 18-21-year-olds, who have been on Universal Credit and seeking work for 18 months, will be offered a six-month paid role of up to 25 hours a week at National Minimum Wage. The Government will cover 100% of employment costs.
An initial 1,000 places will be available from spring 2026 in Birmingham and Solihull, the East Midlands, Greater Manchester, Hertfordshire and Essex, Central and East Scotland, and southwest and southeast Wales. A full national rollout is planned for autumn 2026.
BPCA said the scheme aligns closely with the needs of professional pest management, which depends on trained technicians with a clear understanding of public health, legislation and best practice.
Karen Dawes, BPCA training and development manager, said the initiative could help businesses find committed new starters while giving young people a structured route into the industry.
“This is a genuinely exciting opportunity for our industry,” she said. ‘We know businesses are looking for committed new starters, and there are young people out there who just need the right opportunity and support.
“The Youth Guarantee helps bridge that gap. If we get behind this as a sector, we can build the next generation of professional pest technicians.”
BPCA suggested the scheme may particularly suit firms looking to grow their technician workforce, those with capacity to mentor a young starter, or businesses aiming to strengthen long-term workforce stability.
Members interested in taking part are advised to contact their local Jobcentre Plus or DWP employer engagement team and to consider which roles in their business could offer a structured entry route.
BPCA has also confirmed it can support members with onboarding and training for new recruits.
