Pest Minds, the mental health Community Interest Company for the pest management sector, has launched a new Charter to help businesses take practical, meaningful steps to support mental health and wellbeing at work.
The Pest Minds Charter has been created specifically for the pest management industry, recognising the unique pressures faced by business owners, managers, technicians, office teams and anyone responsible for supporting people in the sector.
The Charter gives pest management businesses a clear framework for understanding where they are now, identifying gaps and taking realistic steps to improve mental health and wellbeing in their workplace.
Anna Mollins, founder of Pest Minds, said: “For a long time, mental health in the pest industry hasn’t had a clear standard. That’s exactly why the Pest Minds Charter now exists.
“This isn’t just about awareness. The Charter defines what involvement actually looks like, at every level.
“Whether you’re just starting out, building awareness, or already supporting mental wellbeing in your business, there’s a place for you in this Charter. Because involvement isn’t one-size-fits-all. It’s about understanding where you are and taking the next step.”
The Charter is built around the belief that mental health is everyone’s responsibility, support must be practical and relevant, and continuous improvement is more valuable than box-ticking.
It is structured around six core pillars:
- Leadership and accountability;
- Awareness, education and training;
- Support systems and signposting;
- Workplace culture and communication;
- Health, safety and psychological risk; and
- Continuous improvement and review.
Each pillar sets out minimum expectations, industry-specific considerations and development ideas, helping businesses move from good intentions to meaningful action.
Signing the Charter means making a clear commitment to recognise the realities of pest management work, to create an environment where people can speak openly without judgement, to actively support those around them, and to use the tools and resources available, including knowing when and how to signpost people to professional help.
Ms Mollins continued: “We are a unique industry, and this Charter gives businesses a framework to improve mental health and wellbeing, specifically in pest control.
“This is for business owners, managers, technicians, back-office teams, and anyone responsible for people, including themselves.
“Behind every pest management business are people doing a difficult and often overlooked job. If we want a healthier industry, we need to support the people behind the work.”
One Charter – two routes
Businesses can get involved with the Pest Minds Charter in two ways.
Signatory (free)
Becoming a Signatory is free and allows businesses to make a clear and public commitment to supporting mental health and wellbeing. Signatories are recognised on the Pest Minds platform, can use official Signatory branding and stand alongside other businesses committed to improving support across the industry.
Verified Status
For businesses that want to go further, Verified Status provides a structured review of the practical steps being taken to support wellbeing in the workplace. This may include areas such as workload management, communication, awareness, access to support and how mental health is considered within health and safety.
The verification process is not a pass-or-fail audit. It is designed to be supportive and proportionate, recognising what a business is already doing well and highlighting opportunities to improve.
The Charter has also been designed with businesses of different sizes in mind. The realities of running a sole trader operation are very different from managing a larger, multi-branch organisation, so the process has been built to remain practical, manageable and relevant.
