The Italian BL Group had two busy days at Pest-Protect supporting the group’s major German distributor, PPS, as well as welcoming international visitors to its stand. In the light of the current global concerns about the Zika virus, the Group’s novel mosquito control product, Aquatain AMF, attracted plenty of interest.

Strong presence for BL Group at Pest-Protect

Aquatain AMF is a unique, eco-friendly, silicone-based liquid film for mosquito control which was recently accepted as a physical means of control, meaning it is outside the scope of the EU Biocidal Product Regulation and can be sold across the EU without the need for special authorisation.

Aquatain is just one of a range of products for the professional public health sector available from the BL Group, which is perhaps better known across Europe as Bleu Line. These days Bleu Line is just of one of six separate ‘divisions’ that make up the Group but, with a turnover of some Euro 10 million (£7.75m), it a significant European manufacturer and marketing business for the professional pest management sector.

Headquarters are in Northern Italy so the relocation of the main German pest management event to Stuttgart was helpful, reducing travelling time for export sales manager Stefano Scarponi who commented: “We had visitors from Austria and Switzerland as well as parts of Germany that would not have attended if the German event had, as previously, been held in Dortmund.”

Stefano’s colleague on the export side is Jurij Bilandžic Zajec who was also pleased to welcome a number of pest professionals who had travelled to Stuttgart from his native Slovenia. As usual, part of the Bleu Line display was allocated to Italian application equipment specialists, Spray Team, represented by Mauro Bergamini.

Stefano continued: “Bleu Line was established in 1982 and the business has been built on a tradition of technological innovation. For the past three years we have been investing in our new unit Bleu Line Export with a focus on offering solutions that have low environmental impact. In addition to Aquatain this has included a range of natural products from Union BIO and the development of our own insecticidal formulations based on natural pyrethrums.

“Thanks to an agreement with Botanical Resources Australia Pty Ltd, the Australian producer of more than 60% of the world’s pyrethrum, the BL Group is now able to guarantee high quality, high-performance formulations specifically created for the professional pest control industry,” he explained.

Currently registered products based on pyrethrum are:

  • Piretrox (concentrated liquid)
  • Piretrox RTU (ready to use liquid)

Available in the coming months are:

  • Piretrox DUST (micro-granular)
  • Piretrox ME (micro-encapsulated)
  • Piretrox SPRAY (aerosol)

BL Group products headed for the UK

UK readers will be pleased to hear that, as well as the natural pyrethrum-based Piretrox products, the Group also has plans to introduce its deltamethrin-based insecticide, Bleu Delta. EU authorisation of these brands is expected “in the next few weeks” using the new EU-wide authorisation process which was introduced in the Biocidal Products Regulation (BPR). The BPR came into effect in September 2013 replacing the Biocidal Products Directive (BPD). Uisng this new provision companies can place their biocidal products on the EU market throughout the entire Union, without the need to obtain specific national authorisations. Aquatain ia already available in the UK through Barrettine.
