It was announced today, 21 April 2017, that Rentokil Pest Control has been awarded The Queen’s Award for Enterprise for International Trade, recognising the business’s outstanding achievement in global trade.

Commenting on the award, Andy Ransom, chief executive of parent company, Rentokil Initial plc, said: “We are extremely proud to receive The Queen’s Award for Enterprise. Being acknowledged in this way is a fantastic achievement and is testament to the hard work and commitment of our colleagues across the world.

“Rentokil is an outstanding business and has grown significantly over recent years, strengthening our position as global leaders in pest control through a relentless focus on innovation, digital services and the expertise of our people.

The Queen’s Award celebrates enterprise and business excellence and is the UK’s highest accolade for business success. It consists of a ‘Grant of Appointment’, which is awarded for five years. The key achievements which led to the award are summarised as:

  • The company’s international pest control revenues increased by 73% between 2010 and 2015. In 2016 total ongoing revenues grew by almost 26%;
  • Over the past three years Rentokil has expanded its pest control operations significantly in North America, Latin and Central America, the Middle East, Asia and the Pacific;
  • The business won some of the most prestigious pest control contracts in recent years including the Rio Olympic and Paralympic Games;
  • Innovation has been integral to its success. Recent innovations include Lumnia which the company says is the first commercial range of LED fly control units, RapidPro, a fast-acting bait for mouse infestations and PestConnect, the Rentokil digital pest control system for 24/7 monitoring and fast response.

First quarter results

Rentokil was also in the news on Wednesday 19 April, when it released its first quarter results for 2017.

The company reported a 10% increase in revenue, just over 3% of which was from organic growth i.e. from the existing business, with almost 7% coming from acquisitions. Within this pest control was the star performer growing by some 19%. The company reported a continuing strong performance in Asia, Pacific, Latin America, the UK and, in its largest market, North America.

Rentokil has already acquired 12 businesses this year; ten in pest control. This includes Atlanta-based pest control company Allgood Pest Solutions and the joint venture with PCI Pest Control Pvt. Ltd, India’s largest pest control company, making Rentokil, which has management control of the joint venture, the biggest pest control business in India.

On 11 April Rentokil’s joint venture company in Saudi Arabia acquired Sames, the market leader in the commercial pest control sector in that country, so now Rentokil is also the number one pest control company in Saudi Arabia and the Gulf Cooperation Council countries.

Andy Ransom said: “We have made a good start to 2017. Pest Control has performed well across the regions. We are particularly pleased with our JV with PCI in India, which is an outstanding business in a country with significant growth potential for commercial and residential pest control services. We are confident that the company will deliver a performance in line with expectations for 2017.”

This good first quarter performance follows a very strong result in 2016, as reported in Pest 49: February & March 2017. Read more on 2016 results by downloading the Rentokil Initial Annual Report here, or from the Pest library.
